    Thousands cheered as New Zealand's tallest building, the Sky Tower, lit up with a colourful fireworks display to ring in 2012. Auckland was the first major city in the world to usher in the new year. Although partly covered by cloud, the fireworks ushered in a new beginning for many New Zealander's after tragedy struck in 2011. Two major earthquakes hit Christchurch, killing 181 people on February 22 while another measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale again shook the city just before Christmas. Fireworks in the capital city of Wellington were cancelled due to wet weather.

    Hong Kong celebrated the arrival of the new year with a firework show involving 11 buildings on the city's waterfront. 9:00PM GMT 31 Dec 2011 More than 400,000 spectators at Victoria Harbour watched a four-minute choreographed show, featuring "meteor showers" for revellers to make wishes for an auspicious new year. Meanwhile in Taiwan tens of thousands of people gathered in front of the world's second tallest building to welcome 2012. The landmark Taipei 101 building provided the backdrop for a firework show, followed by an evening of concerts and performances. In Beijing thousands of people also watched the city's first official New Year's Eve countdown. Organisers said about 3,500 pre-selected students, tourists and guests took part in the event at the historic Temple of Heaven. The crowd shouted in unison as the last seconds of 2011 ticked away on numbers projected onto the 600-year-old building. As the first seconds of 2012 clocked in, laser lights lit up the imperial temple and red balloons rose to the sky among green laser beams and gold confetti. Despite fireworks being invented in China, none were let off at the ceremony. In a statement, organisers said that they were not environmentally friendly.

    London welcomed the New Year with a spectacular firework display around the London Eye and Big Ben. 1:14AM GMT 01 Jan 2012 About 250,000 party-goers watched as the Thames was lit up by one of the best fireworks displays witnessed in the capital city in recent years. Big Ben made sure the Olympic year was welcomed with a bang in a stunning display that saw fireworks launched from the tower at midnight. In a first for the London's New Year celebrations, the pyrotechnics were fired from the landmark to coincide with each strike of the bell, marking the start of 2012. There was a distinctly Olympian theme to the display on the River Thames with fireworks launched over the London Eye in the shape and colours of the Olympic rings. The accompanying soundtrack saw Chariots of Fire kick off a medley of London-themed songs. Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "Our New Year fireworks were a brilliant start to a spectacular year.

    The United Arab Emirates welcomed 2012 with an extravagant firework display around the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. 10:11PM GMT 31 Dec 2011 The audience in Dubai was thrilled as the tower lit up, seemed to spin and spouted fireworks from it top floor in a display lasting around 10 minutes.
